If by "thingy" you mean the grip sleeve, first off let me wish you luck.
It is cemented to the bar and requires solvent to remove. The best I've
found for removing glued grips is called MEK. It is EXTREMELY flammable;
the fumes are classified as a neurotoxin, and the vapors cause dizziness,
nausea and really bad headaches. Any PPG paint dealer will have it. They are
required to sell you an activated charcoal respirator when you buy it.
Sometimes you can get the glue softened with nail polish remover or WD 40
(Lisa says get regular polish remover, not the stuff for artificial nails).
Try them first.
Once the glue is soft you can generally place a small flathead screwdriver
between the grip and the bar and gently lever it off. If that doesn't work,
try compressed air to blow it off.
If the grip does not seem to want to come off, just strip the rest of the
hardware from the old bars, transfer to your new ones, and go buy
a set of Harley grips. They work fine, look better, and will last
longer. (And I find them more comfortable, they are a little bit bigger
in outside diameter.)
